Landscape Architecture is a hidden gem most people would over look. To succeed as a Landscape Architect, you should enjoy working in nature & with your hands because about 50% of your time will consist of traveling to different sites & board meetings; being in good general health is also helpful to others. Because Landscape Architects often work as part of a team, strong communication & interpersonal skills are critical for a successful career.

Landscape Architects work with contractors, designers which include game designers & owners to create plans for building sites & the surrounding areas. Landscape Architects help to design sites like public parks, parkways, golf courses, schools, college campuses, stadium, shopping centers & playgrounds, etc. Common duties of Landscape Architects include using computer-aided design (CAD) software, using geographic information systems (GIS), creating models, consulting with contractors, meeting with clients & visiting sites.

In 2017, Architecture & engineering occupations earned an average of about $86k per year. The number of people employed as Architects & Engineers has been growing at a rate about 3%, about 2.7M people in 2016 to about 2.8M people in 2017. About 84% of Architects & Engineers are Male, making them the more common gender in the occupation. About 77% of Architects & Engineers are White, making that the most common race or ethnicity in the occupation. Representing about 12% of Architects & Engineers, Asians are the second most common race or ethnicity in this occupation and about 6% are Black.  

To Become A Landscape Architect

You’ll need at least a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture or another relevant field. Common courses in a 4-year bachelor’s degree program that will help prepare you for a career in landscape architecture include construction techniques, art, history, design & natural & social sciences. Fifty states require landscaping architects to be licensed or certified by passing the Landscape Architect Registration Examination; some states may have an additional state level exam.
