Than becoming a judge would be a great career. Judges tend to work with criminal, corporate law, municipal law, pre-trial hearings, small claims cases, and misdemeanor trials. Judges all preside over courtrooms and must be well aware of the laws which impact their cases. They also must be aware of changes in precedents, and carefully review facts, legal briefs, arguments, testimonies, documents, and evidence brought before them, whether it is presented by an attorney or a citizen representing oneself, as is common in small claims cases.

Regardless of the type of law they address, all must take the facts into account and preside in a fair and impartial manner to allow the facts of the case to determine the outcome. Thus, critical thinking skills, strong listening skills, and well-developed communication skills are essential in these positions, and well-developed administrative skills as well as completing detailed paperwork and oversee court clerks and others who work under them.

In 2017, Judges earned an average of $160k per year. About 60% Judges are Male, making them the more common gender in the occupation. About 86% Judge  workers are White, making that the most common race or ethnicity in the occupation. Representing about 5% of Judges, Black is the second most common race or ethnicity in this occupation.

 

How To Become A Judge 

Judges have to complete a bachelor’s degree followed by a degree of Juris Doctor (J.D.). Often, years of experience as a practicing attorney make it possible for the prospective district court judge to be considered for appointment. Most judges are expected to complete continuing education and training courses. Because there are a limited number of district court judges, and because the prestige of the position is high, competition for appointments is keen. Appointment as a district court judge usually requires at least some political backing. The annual wage for a district court judge was $208,000 in 2018, according to the Federal Judicial Center (www.fjc.gov). According to BLS data, employment among all judges, is expected to grow about 6% from 2016-2026.
