Health and Wellness Program Coordinator
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Kinesiology or related discipline.
Three (3) years of fitness experience in conducting fitness assessments, nutritional analysis, and health risk appraisals to include: body composition analysis, health risk assessment, and behavior modification consultations.
Demonstrated knowledge of cardiovascular, muscular, and nutritional components preferably in corporate health programming or a paramilitary environment.
Experience managing the day-to-day operations of a fitness center.
An equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience may be considered. Such must be clearly demonstrated on the application for consideration.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/CPR)
Previous coursework in basic First Aid is preferred
Certification in the area of physical fitness or personal training recognized by at least one of the following associations:
National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)
CSCS, TSAC-F or CPT National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)
CPT, PES, or CES American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
EP-C, CPT or CEP American Council on Exercise (ACE)
Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) Fitness Institute International, Inc.
CPTS Cooper Institute (CI)
Law Enforcement Fitness Specialist or Fire Service Fitness Specialist CrossFit
Level 1 Instructor or above Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) – Certified Personal Trainer
Nature of Work
Under administrative direction, the purpose of this position is to provide professional administrative coordination of health and wellness programs within the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Work involves coordinating employee participation in fitness and wellness programs. Manages services to include fitness assessments, exercise prescriptions, nutritional advice, lifestyle analysis, and health risk appraisals to include body composition analysis, health risk assessment, and behavior modification consultations. Manages the development, coordination, oversight, review and assessment of the programs and activities related to the Wellness Program and fitness centers. Programs include but are not limited to: performance enhancement, functional capability, weight management, stress management, Ergonomics, injury prevention and lifting safety. Ensures the Wellness program exceeds applicable accreditation standards. Work is reviewed through reports and observation of program effectiveness. Performs related work as directed.
Essential Functions/Physical Requirements

Coordinates the development, promotion, implementation and administration of agency-wide health and wellness programming, i.e. physical activity challenges, wellness fairs, wellness webinars and trainings.
Manages and oversees operations of the fitness center.
Oversees and maintains the Wellness SharePoint site.
Liaison with Employee Benefits and the benefits providers to schedule the on-site dietitian counseling services and group exercise classes.
Ensures efficient allocation and economical use of all agency, project, and program resources.
Liaison with Employee Benefits and the Bureau of Finance for the annual wellness budget.
Develops physical fitness programming for pre-academies cadets to ensure readiness and enhance performance.
Develops training that integrates physical fitness, wellness education, and health risk reduction to optimize the health and productivity of employees.
Coordinates and conducts fitness assessments, nutritional analysis, health risk appraisals to include body composition analysis, health risk assessment, and consultations to address modifiable behavioral risk factors.
Develops individualized exercise prescriptions and provides initial and on-going counseling to employees.
Performs operational duties of fitness center to include but not limited to, the enforcement of fitness center rules, housekeeping duties, equipment and facility upkeep, orientation of facility and equipment.
Coordinates and delivers training programs in areas to include but not limited to: physical development, stress management, weight management, ergonomics, injury prevention, and safe biomechanics.
Facilitates employee participation in fitness programs through delivery of services that are user- friendly, viable and accessible.
Leads exercise sessions and supervises ancillary exercise staff, including assistance in the training and oversight of fitness and nutrition internship students.
Assists with preparing and monitoring the fitness and wellness center’s operational plan.
Proposes recommendations pertaining to updates for equipment and facilities, as needed.
Promotes a positive image of the agency to maximize utilization of services.
Keeps abreast on current industry trends and issues affecting the health and fitness industry to incorporate state-of-the-art techniques and equipment into facility operations.
Maintains competency in cardiac life support and emergency protocols and procedures.
Develops reports in response to management requests for specialized information.
Attends meetings, workshops and conferences as directed.
Gathers and analyzes data to measure the success of BSO wellness programs and initiatives.
Manages changes and/or additions to programs and initiatives that reflect the changing needs of the employees.
Continues to seek ways to improve the means and manner in which BSO communicates with employees regarding safety and wellness issues.
May represent the agency at health and wellness events and participates in selected associations involved in public safety or corporate health and wellness.
Performs related duties as directed.
Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort which involves lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials in excess of 50 pounds. Tasks are performed in a workout facility where proper provisions are in place in terms of employee safety and well-being. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements consistent with routine conditions of a workout facility environment. Tasks include working around gym equipment, outdoor training facilities and materials handling where physical risks are predictable and/or controllable by observance of standard safety precautions.
