Operator - (Nuclear Operations Development Program)
Position Specific Description
The NextGen Operator – Nuclear Operations Development Program is a part-time, early-career role designed to develop future nuclear operations talent through a structured learning and operations-focused pipeline. Employees in this role participate in progressive training, operational assignments, and on-site learning experiences that support the safe and reliable operation of a commercial nuclear power plant.
This position provides exposure to nuclear plant systems, procedures, and operational standards while building foundational knowledge aligned with future entry into licensed nuclear operator training pathways. Individuals work under the direction of Operations leadership and Training staff in a highly regulated, safety-focused environment.
Key Responsibilities
Participate in structured operations training, coursework, and qualification activities aligned with nuclear operator development pathways
Support control room and field operations by observing licensed operators and assisting with approved operational tasks under supervision
Complete simulator training, systems training, and on-the-job learning activities as assigned
Perform operations-focused assignments and on-site activities to develop knowledge of nuclear plant systems and procedures
Participate in daily plant activities supporting safe and reliable operations, including equipment observations and operational support activities
Conduct field walk-downs and support plant documentation reviews and procedure validation efforts
Demonstrate professional behaviors, accountability, and a strong nuclear safety focus
Maintain required training records, qualification documentation, and program milestones
Engage in mentoring, coaching, and feedback sessions with Operations leadership and Training staff
Eligible Engineering Majors include:
Nuclear Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Power Systems Engineering
Other Engineering disciplines may be considered
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED
Actively enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university
Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering
Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Meet nuclear site access, training, and safety requirements for a regulated work environment
Preferred Qualifications
Prior coursework or exposure to nuclear power generation or industrial systems
Interest in nuclear plant operations and long-term licensed operator career pathways
Technical aptitude demonstrated through labs, internships, co-ops, or hands-on mechanical/electrical experience
Strong safety mindset and professionalism in a regulated environment
Job Overview
This job is responsible for routine engineering assignments involving basic engineering techniques. Employees in this role apply practical applications of engineering principles, practices and procedures and work under close supervision with detailed instructions.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Performs data analysis and basic engineering tasks for completion of small projects
Perform basic engineering calculations required for simple designs
Collects and evaluates data to recommend a course of action
Assists more experienced engineers in the completion of large complex projects
Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
High School Grad/ GED
Enrolled in Bachelor of Engineering Program at designated university
Cumulative 3.00 GPA or higher
Preferred Qualifications
Junior year or higher program status
