Physical Trader II
The trader will develop strategies to engage effectively in the real-time and short-term energy markets, optimizing client generation and native load requirements in bilateral and/or RTO markets. This position will work closely with the generation and fuels teams to allocate the plant’s resources and make economic decisions, while securing the necessary transmission for delivery in the SERC region. Candidates should be familiar with the economic and dispatch characteristics of combined cycle, peaking, nuclear, and pump storage facilities, as well as other generating units. Additionally, they should understand the protocols and requirements outlined in ISO/RTO tariffs. Proficiency in using the PJM, SP P, and MISO market portals, as well as other industry tools used to reserve transmission and to tag transactions in a bilateral market.
Job Details:
Support asset optimization targets by making informed decisions based on unit capabilities, market fundamentals, fuel prices, constraints, economic dispatch, ramp issues, and curtailments, while effectively managing fuel burns and other relevant factors.
Receive and accurately communicate unit status changes from plant sites/control areas to the Day Ahead power and Fuel Desks. It is important to ensure all information gathered is properly logged to facilitate compliance and an effective shift turnover.
Monitor market conditions, coordinate with control areas to optimize client resources for meeting load obligations and arrange fuel procurement if needed.
Engage with market participants to develop, negotiate, and execute transactions that will provide value to the portfolios.
Collaborate with Forward Trading and Business Management employees to evaluate specific market conditions that would help develop trading strategies to optimize client resources.
Identify and maintain knowledge of clients’ generation and resource assets.
Ensure all transactions are profit-driven, based on energy price, transmission, counterparty contracts, and credit limits, while adhering to compliance and risk policies.
Comply with and support all corporate policies and adhere to all regulatory requirements, including but not limited to NERC, FERC, and relevant state regulations as applicable.
Evaluate daily positions and mitigate market exposure by covering short positions when applicable.
Manage communications between reliability entities, generators, and client operators.
Analyzes energy and transmission alternatives to proactively transact in new markets.
Maintain knowledge of tagging requirements and methodologies stated in the tariffs and business practices of the applicable transmission providers and RTO/ISO markets.
Accurately record all necessary purchase and sale details in log and deal capturing systems
Interface with and manage requests and projects involving clients and various company departments, including
Traders, Business Development, Origination Group, Information Technology, Settlements, Regulatory, Credit, Contracts, and other departments.
The candidate will be required to work a rotating shift on the trading floor as part of a team to provide 24-hour coverage for the portfolios
Demonstrates excellent customer management skills and the ability to build business relationships with other counterparties
Able to effectively utilize excellent written and oral communication skills to relay real-time market information to various personnel on the trading floor.
Ability to prioritize tasks by responding appropriately to the most important obligations.
Use strong analytical skills to demonstrate superior attention to detail while acting as subject matter expert by adhering to established procedures and protocols
